Lismore Castle Gardens

Nestled in the picturesque countryside of County Waterford, Ireland, lies the enchanting garden of Lismore Castle. This historic estate boasts a stunning array of flora and fauna, immaculately manicured lawns, and breathtaking views of the majestic castle itself. Visitors are transported to a realm where time stands still, allowing for moments of peace and reflection amidst nature’s beauty.

Lismore Castle Gardens, originally constructed in 1185 by King John, hold a rich history shaped by various owners such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Richard Boyle. These gardens are renowned as the oldest continuously cultivated gardens in Ireland, offering breathtaking views of Lismore Castle and the picturesque Blackwater valley. Spanning seven acres within the 17th-century castle walls, visitors can explore the gardens boasting a diverse array of plant life including magnolias, camellias, and rhododendrons.

The Upper Garden’s walls and terraces date back to Richard Boyle’s time in 1605, while the Lower gardens are a creation of the 6th Duke of Devonshire in collaboration with architect Joseph Paxton. This area features the Yew Tree Walk, famously associated with Edmund Spenser’s writing of ‘The Faerie Queen’ around 1590. Over time, sculptures have been added to the garden by successive generations of the Devonshire family.

In a nod to environmental stewardship, Lismore Castle Gardens earned an Eco-Merit award in April 2014 for their commitment to sustainability through an environmental policy, performance monitoring, and pollution prevention initiatives. Additionally, in 2005, part of the castle was transformed into a contemporary gallery known as Lismore Castle Arts.
