The Butterfly Valley

Rhodes Butterfly Valley is a stunning picturesque valley located on the Greek island of Rhodes that offers visitors an unforgettable experience. It is home to some of the most beautiful butterfly species in Europe, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. The valley also offers breathtaking views from its hilltop location, surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation and dotted with ancient ruins.

The Butterfly Valley was established as a protected area in 1993, with the goal of protecting the rare species found there. Visitors can explore the area on foot, admiring its diverse wildlife and observing colorful butterflies fluttering about. This beautiful spot is home to over 500 species of butterflies from all around the world, ranging from small blues and skippers to larger swallowtails and gliders. Many species are endemic to this region, such as the scarce swallowtail butterfly, which can only be seen here. At the Butterfly Valley you will see these winged creatures fluttering through the air in search of food or to rest among its flowers and trees that provide shelter.

The best time to see them in all their glory is May – this is the time of year when the rainy season ends, and when they descend on the Butterfly Valley’s sweetgum trees, which are only found here in Europe. Walking under a thick blanket of fluttering butterflies is a truly magical experience!

The valley also houses many endemic plant species as well as several endangered mammals such as wild cats, deer and foxes. There are also several botanical gardens in the valley where visitors can admire trees and flowers that grow exclusively here. The Butterfly Valley is a must-see for any nature lover looking to explore the majestic beauty of Greece.

We visited the Valley of the Butterflies at the end of October. Be aware: the famous butterflies are gone for the season. Instead, we spotted many crabs in the streams! The major upside was the weather—no intense heat, making the beautiful hike very enjoyable. It is a stunningly green and tranquil location, highly recommended for a peaceful walk,...

Been here 10 years ago (to a different part) it was lovely and relaxing then, it seems to have become much more commercial with several car parks and costly snack bar. Car parking is far away and there is no accessibility - we had to walk down a long, dangerous (steep road on a blind bend) to get to the entrance - so hectic with cars and people!...

Such a lovely place! Even though it wasn’t butterfly season and we didn’t see any, it was still totally worth the visit. The scenery is beautiful and perfect for a nice walk. Just be ready for a pretty steep climb — it’s a bit of a workout, but the views at the top make it all worth it!

Beautiful valley in the heart of Rhodes hills. I would recommend an early start to beat the crowds and cars that arrive mid morning. The walk is about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 round trip if you take it easy. Most of the butterflies are in the upper valley, take an information leaflet when you pay your 6€ (Sept 2025) entrance fee to read the short...

We were in the butterfly valley on September 18th and luckily we saw a lot of butterflies. They are orange in flight, and after landing, their wings are brown and white. There were many visitors, the entrance fee was 6 €. I highly recommend it!
