Chess Game in Marostica

September 6, 2024 -
September 8, 2024
A medieval festival in Marostica, Italy, at night in front of a castle, featuring performers in costumes, musicians, and chess games.

The Chess Game in Marostica, a splendid town in the Veneto region of Italy, offers a unique spectacle that merges history, tradition, and live strategy. This extraordinary event, held biennially in the picturesque Piazza Castello, transforms the town square into a giant chessboard, where human chess pieces come to life in a game narrating a tale of love and challenge from the 15th century.  The origins of this event are rooted in a legendary story of two noble knights called Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonar who competed for the hand of Lionora, the daughter of the Lord of Marostica, not through a duel, but through a game of chess.

Against the stunning backdrop of Marostica’s medieval castle walls, the event is a vivid tableau of period costumes, flag bearers, knights, and dancers, all contributing to an atmosphere that feels as if one has stepped back into the Renaissance. The chess pieces, represented by local participants dressed in elaborate costumes, move across the board to the commands of the game players, accompanied by music and theatrical performances that narrate the story behind the game.

This magnificent re-enactment is a celebration of Marostica’s heritage, attracting visitors from across the globe. The town, with its ancient buildings and cobblestone streets, provides the perfect setting for this historical re-creation, offering a feast for the senses and a journey into the past.

The Chess Game in Marostica offers an enchanting experience that captivates the imagination and transports spectators to a time of chivalry and romance. This event is a must-see for anyone interested in history, chess, or Italian culture, providing a unique blend of live theater and ancient tradition.
