Avli Lounge Apartments is an expression of Crete’s layered past. Once the location of a Venetian lord’s home, an olive press, soap factory and tannery, it snugly sits within a cluster of three Venetian houses – the first of which was built in 1660 – in the heart of Rethymnon’s old city.
Local history is communicated through the property’s Cretan, Venetian and Turkish architecture and features that whisper of an island heritage that knows occupation and resistance well. Seven distinctive suites combine historic touches like Venetian arches, antique furniture, and works of art with a modern minibar, jacuzzi baths and satellite TV: a perfect balance of the old and new that will leave you wanting nothing.
Undoubtedly, one of the highlights of our historic hotel is our award-winning restaurant, Avli – one of the founding members of the Society for the Preservation of Mediterranean Cuisine.
Our gastronomic offering at Avli restaurant is beloved by locals and travellers alike. There’s no better place to get familiar with the wonderful world of Cretan cuisine – a delightful mezze of flavour and variety, whipped together with the island’s natural produce and local fare. Along with our exemplary food, we also have a wine cellar with more than 460 different vintage wines to swish, sniff and sip.

At Avli Lounge Apartments, you can book a cookery class to learn all about Cretan gastronomy, and where it relates to the island’s history – as well as getting hands-on with making some classic meals yourself.
