Novacella Abbey, also known as Abbazia di Novacella in Italian, is a beautiful and historically significant monastic complex located in the picturesque Valle Isarcoin in the heart of South Tyrol. Founded in 1142 by Augustinian canons, it has been a spiritual center for centuries, attracting visitors from all over the world to admire its unique architecture and rich cultural heritage.
As soon as you step foot inside the abbey’s premises, you are transported back in time to an era where art and architecture were revered. The stunning Romanesque style architecture of the abbey’s church is a sight to behold with its imposing pillars and intricate details adorning every corner.
One of the main attractions of Novacella Abbey is its stunning Baroque church, built between 1743 and 1772. The church features an impressive frescoed ceiling by Paul Troger and numerous works of art by local painters such as Franz Unterberger. The abbey’s library is another treasure trove of history and culture, containing more than 90,000 volumes including rare manuscripts dating back to the Middle Ages.
Besides its architectural wonders, Novacella Abbey has something for nature lovers too.
