Estnisches Bergbaumuseum

Fancy a trip underground? Perhaps a rougher experience, but one that would surely be just as unforgettable as it is informative could be a trip down to the Estonian Mining Museum, or better locally known as the Eesti Kaevandusmuuseum.

The museum is located mostly underground in what were formerly known as the Kohtla mines. The first written records of burning stone on this site date back to 1777, mining began in the area in 1916 and in Kohtla twenty years later. It was in operation until 2001.

In the mines one can join an excursion with a guide to see how oil shale is mined and the machinery and technology that is used to do so, take a ride on an underground train, or try their hand at drilling, using a real drill! The museum provides every visitor with a special jacket, helmet and miner’s lamp.
