A huge number of tourists, culture seekers and history lovers voted for their favourite nominated properties in the eighth edition of the Historic Hotels of Europe Awards. There were ten categories to vote in this year, including two new ones - the Historic Hotel Sustainability Award and New Entry Historic Hotel Award - giving us the opportunity to celebrate a range of hotels in our Collection for a variety of achievements.
It was a particularly exciting voting period this year, as we spiced things up for participants by offering them the chance to win a four-night getaway to one of our five member hotels in Lisbon, Portugal: all of which belong to the family-run Lisbon Heritage Hotels group, that generously offered the prize.
What’s more, among the hundreds that voted between December 2021 and February 2022, 87% had previously stayed at the hotel they nominated, giving future travellers the confidence they need to take a closer look at each winning property. Discover them below.
Known as “the hotel from fairytales”, it’s no surprise that Dalen Hotel in Norway snagged this year’s “Story To Share” award. Between its “floating” spa, jaw-dropping architecture and exciting common areas, including a terrace and gallery, there’s plenty of ways for guests to make memories here.
Chateau Liblice in the Czech Republic has perfected the art of blending the old with the new, and combines a classic atmosphere with contemporary comforts, such as top-class amenities and decadent room service. There’s a restaurant and spa to explore, too: both of which elevate this property to heavenly heights.
Hotel Stefanie has done it again, and has swept up the accolade of best historic city hotel for the second time (having also won in this category in 2020). Having operated since the year 1600, it’s the oldest hotel in Vienna, Austria, and has clearly lost none of its charm or first-rate hospitality over the centuries.
Hotel Gino Park Palace has been named the best place in our Collection to say “I do”. This Slovakian gem goes above and beyond to make weddings as magical as possible - and even offers their clients the help of professional wedding organisers to take care of their special day’s finest details, from the ceremony itself to cutting the cake.
Overlooking Bantry Bay and Garinish Island on the famous Wild Atlantic Way coastline, Eccles Hotel is situated in one of the most enviable places in all of Ireland. Glorious trips into the countryside are a must here, though the hotel itself also deserves its own fair share of attention. From its rejuvenating rooms to lounge areas, it exudes charm.
Greece’s island of Santorini has long-been called one of the most romantic places to travel to in Europe… especially if you stay at Esperas Santorini, according to this year’s voters. This pearlescent property contains 17 Greek-style studios complete with perks such as jacuzzis, luxurious beds and bathroom amenities. It’s a paradise for lovers.
Foodies are never more delighted than when settling down at a table at Ghan House. This Irish hotel's restaurant has won numerous awards over the years (and can now add this one to its list!): loved by tourists and locals alike for the gourmet dishes and impeccable flavours it delivers.
The spa and wellness services at Italy's Relais San Biagio are as unique as they are regenerative, with treatments inspired by the age-old traditions of the property and the monks who once lived there. It’s an incredible place to boost your mind, body and spirit before exploring beautiful Perugia.
Schloss Wartegg in Switzerland is the first to be dubbed the best sustainable hotel in the Historic Hotels of Europe Awards 2022. Along with its strong focus on cycling and bike tours, the property prizes organic ingredients, and makes the most of its extraordinary locale on the shores of Lake Constance: a remarkable slice of Swiss nature.
The peaceful Komierowo Palace in Poland is a wonderful recent addition to our Collection. Not only does the building boast a sauna and jacuzzi house, 16 hectares of enchanting parkland and gorgeously-furnished rooms festooned with Art Deco elements, it has a fascinating history: featuring knights, royalty and noble families. It’s quite the all-rounder.

Now that the winners have been chosen, it’s time to party… in due course. Our original awards ceremony, which was planned for March 21 2022 at the Grand Hotel et de Milan, has been postponed to October in light of further COVID developments. We hope that the event will be a great opportunity to celebrate the winners in style… but until then, please join us in raising a (virtual) glass to them all. They truly deserve their crowns.
