Nestled in the historic center of Taormina, Hotel Villa Schuler offers its guests not only elegant rooms and impeccable service, but also a truly exceptional natural treasure: its private botanical garden. Spanning 1,500 square meters, this lush green haven is a peaceful retreat where nature, history, and hospitality blend in perfect harmony. More than just a garden, it is a living museum of Mediterranean and exotic flora, offering guests a unique and unforgettable sensory experience.
The garden dates back to 1902, when the hotel was founded by Eugen Schuler. From the very beginning, it was designed as a place of charm, featuring palms, citrus trees, rosemary, sage, jasmine, and bougainvillea, still filling the air with their enchanting fragrances today.
Among its most remarkable features stands a majestic 200-year-old Pinus pinea, believed to be the oldest tree in Taormina, gracefully overlooking the entire garden.
Over the generations, the Schuler family has enriched the garden with rare species collected from around the world, including exotic palms, banana trees, cacti, and succulents. Today, the collection includes over 300 species from the Mediterranean, Africa, and Asia.
A stroll through the garden invites guests to explore romantic pathways, shaded pergolas, and secluded corners, perfect for moments of relaxation. Flowerbeds in bloom and a dedicated herb garden evoke the rich culinary traditions of Sicily, while a charming pond with goldfish and water turtles adds a serene touch.
The stunning Palm Terrace, overlooking the Ionian Sea, is one of the garden’s most enchanting highlights. Here, oleanders, frangipani, and jasmine create a refined and fragrant setting, ideal for soaking in the breathtaking views. Carefully curated and often labeled with botanical details, the plants offer not only visual delight but also an enriching cultural experience.
The garden is the true heart of Hotel Villa Schuler: not merely a decorative feature, but a living expression of the family’s dedication to preserving nature and creating a tranquil environment for their guests. This commitment extends to sustainable practices, including the use of solar energy and biomass systems, blending innovation with respect for the environment.
In 2023, the garden was honored with membership in the prestigious “Great Gardens of Italy” network, recognizing its botanical excellence and historical significance.
Reserved exclusively for hotel guests, the garden offers a private sanctuary to relax, read, or simply immerse oneself in its beauty. Guided tours are available also for visitors, providing insights into the garden’s history, plant collections, and cultivation techniques, enriching each stay with a deeper connection to this unique place.
At Hotel Villa Schuler, every detail tells a story, every fragrance evokes Sicily, and every moment becomes a cherished memory.
