Velika Planina Plateau

The Velika Planina Plateau is a mesmerizing natural wonder

Nestled amidst Slovenia’s Kamnik Alps, the Velika Planina Plateau is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. At an elevation of 1,666 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lush green landscapes.

Covering an area of approximately 500 hectares, Velika Planina is renowned for its extensive meadows and traditional shepherds’ huts known as ‘koča’. These huts have become iconic symbols of the plateau and provide a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region.

One of the most unique aspects of Velika Planina is its time-honored tradition of seasonal transhumance. Every summer, shepherds lead their flocks to graze on these high-altitude pastures, embracing a way of life that has endured for centuries. This cultural heritage adds an enchanting touch to your visit, as you may witness locals tending their sheep or even taste some delicious traditional dairy products made right on site.

Beyond its pastoral charm, Velika Planina also offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities. Hiking enthusiasts will find themselves spoiled for choice with scenic trails that unravel through dense forests and up towering peaks. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just starting out, there are trails suitable for all skill levels. One trail that shouldn’t be missed is the Zeleni Rob Path, which takes you on a captivating journey through dense forests and alpine meadows. Along this path, visitors can encounter local wildlife such as chamois and groundhogs while inhaling the pristine mountain air.

For those seeking a dose of adrenaline, mountain biking trails crisscross the area – a thrilling way to explore this captivating plateau from a different perspective. Adventure seekers can try their hand at paragliding, while those seeking tranquility can indulge in yoga workshops held amidst nature’s serenity.

For those intrigued by history and culture, a visit to Preskar Museum at Velika Planina cannot be overlooked. The museum provides valuable insights into life on the plateau through exhibits showcasing traditional tools used by shepherds throughout centuries.

To top off your experience at Velika Planina Plateau, stop by one of its charming local restaurants serving authentic Slovenian cuisine made from fresh organic ingredients sourced locally. Indulge in hearty dishes like krapi (Slovenian dumplings) or štruklji (rolled dumplings), and savor the flavors of traditional Alpine cuisine.

If you’re looking to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature’s tranquility while experiencing authentic Slovenian culture, put Velika Planina at the top of your travel wishlist.

Velika Planina offers stunning scenery and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It is a perfect place to slow down and enjoy nature, with traditional huts and a pleasant atmosphere. Easier hike of about 1.5–2 hours from the parking area in the south valley will take you through this beautiful landscape and piece of land. Definitely worth...

Truly a unique experience to walk around here, it’s more beautiful and vast than I imagine. Traditional wooden huts amidst the alpine mountains. Cows roaming around with clouds next to them (saw a herd next to Mount Gradisce) Cable car was not operational due to rope checks so we drove to the highest car park Mackin Kot. From there, it’s still...

Really beautiful. Absolutely worth it! We took the cable cart up (return trip for two people was 54€ free parking which was easy around 10:45am). There was a steep hike up 40mins. But the plateau is gorgeous and nice food options as well.

Absolutely amazing place to spend the day. Walking, beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and local houses, cheese tasting etc.
  • It is nice ofcourse, just as further you go, the prices go up. So better to buy refreshment on beginning/or end then waiting&pay more for the same. We ate in one of the pub cca 1 hour walking from cabine. Well...I ate better to be honest. Completely without taste, nobody took care about how the food will taste. The only food with some taste was...
