Ljubljana Old Town

Ljubljana is the largest city and the capital of Slovenia. The city is located between the Alps and the Karst in a flat area at about 300 meters above sea level along the banks of the Ljubljanica river. It is however most well known for the beauty of its Baroque style old town center.

The architecture of the city is a mix of styles and eras. There are Roman ruins, medieval, Baroque and Austrian-style buildings. The historic center of Ljubljana features interesting Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings. The appearance of the city recalls that of the cities of neighboring Austria.

Among the medieval buildings above all noteworthy is the Castle. A building dating from the twelfth century and overlooking the city from a hill.

In Baroque style are the 18th century Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation which was built in Baroque style in the 17th century. The fountain in Mestni Trg, a 18th century work by the Venetian Francesco Robba. The Bridge of Dragons, the work of the early twentieth century, is probably the most valuable construction of the city in Art Nouveau.

There are several art galleries and museums in Ljubljana. Among the most important museums of the city we find first of all the national gallery and the museum of modern art. But the city is also host to many others.

It is well worth the visit to dive into this city of Baroque masterpieces and elegant style among the beauty of Slovenia.

Around Christmas/ new year this large main square is a hive of festive activities, dominated by a huge radiant Christmas tree, surrounded by food and drink stalls and full of people celebrating. It’s right by the river with its 3 bridges and just across and along the river are more bars and stalls to explore

I visited the square on December 26th, which seemed like a holiday celebration for them. It was very lively, with lots of food and drink stalls, and a great festive atmosphere. The place was crowded but full of energy and fun!

Super cool square next to tons of stores and restaurants. At night there was music and overall a good stop.

Central square of Ljubljana where all the action takes place. Great Christmas market that stretches along the whole riverfront and the whole place is just full of life and vibrancy throughout the day around Christmas and new year season
