El Hierro's Untamed West Coast

El Hierro’s Volcanic Embrace: Exploring the Wild West Coast and Natural Wonders

Far to the west of the Canary archipelago lies El Hierro, the smallest and most remote of the eight islands, a true natural paradise designated as a Biosphere Reserve. Despite its modest size of just 269 square kilometers, El Hierro is packed with breathtaking attractions, boasting a remarkably constant temperature of around 24 degrees Celsius and minimal rainfall year-round. It is on its wild, rugged west coast that the island truly reveals its raw, volcanic heart, inviting adventurers to explore a landscape sculpted by millennia of geological forces and the relentless Atlantic Ocean. This is a place where the earth’s power is palpable, offering an inspiring journey through dramatic cliffs, intricate natural pools, and spectacular volcanic rock formations.

A Landscape Forged by Fire and Time: The Island’s Volcanic Genesis

El Hierro’s dramatic topography is a direct testament to the intense volcanic activity that has shaped it over millions of years. Once considered the edge of the known world, the island consists mostly of colossal cliffs that rise directly from the sea, some soaring over 1000 meters high, creating a truly spectacular and wild coastline. The passage of time, coupled with the ceaseless erosion by wind and waves, has carved the volcanic rock into an abundance of unique and intricate shapes, transforming the coastline into a natural gallery of geological wonders. This ongoing geological dance continues to define El Hierro, making every vista a testament to Earth’s dynamic power.

Sheltered Oases: The Allure of El Hierro’s Natural Pools

Among the most cherished treasures of El Hierro’s west coast are its numerous natural pools, offering serene havens for bathing amidst the rugged beauty. These sheltered pools, formed into varied shapes by thousands of years of erosion, provide astonishing spots for visitors to connect with the natural world.

  • La Maceta: Located in the north of El Hierro, in the municipality of Frontera, La Maceta features a set of natural pools of different depths, perfect for a quiet and comfortable swim. With easy access via stairs, ample parking, and a picnic area, it’s a dreamy location for an unforgettable experience, complete with drinking water facilities.
  • Pozo de las Calcosas: Situated in the northeast municipality of Valverde, this small natural bay is nestled beside a cliff. Beyond its natural beauty, it’s famous for a charming village nearby, characterized by unusual high-roofed houses built from volcanic stone, adding a unique cultural dimension to the natural wonder.
  • Charco Manso: Another stunning example of El Hierro’s natural bathing spots, Charco Manso offers visitors another opportunity to immerse themselves in the island’s unique coastal environment.
  • Charco de los Sargos: This is an amazing swimming spot where the volcanic pool is deep and large enough even during low tide. Here, visitors can explore fascinating caves and arches while enjoying a refreshing swim, making it a truly immersive experience.

Sculptures of Erosion: The Majestic Volcanic Arches

The volcanic activity on El Hierro has also given rise to an array of magnificent stone arches, each a unique sculpture carved by nature. These formations are a highlight for anyone exploring the island’s coastline.

  • Arco de las Puntas: This long, beautiful volcanic rock arch stretches over a small beach in Las Puntas. The surrounding area is dotted with little coves and diverse volcanic formations. At low tide, adventurous visitors can descend into a volcanic tube via stairs to photograph the arch from below.
  • Arco de Piedra at La Maceta: Near the natural pools of La Maceta, this beautifully shaped volcanic stone arch is easily viewed from Mirador Punta del Pozo, accessible via a man-made walking path from the parking lot at the pools.
  • Arco de la Tosca: Likely the longest stone arch on El Hierro, Arco de la Tosca is located on the west coast, making it one of the best places to witness a spectacular sunset. It’s easily accessible by car, with a parking lot and a short path leading to this magnificent formation.
  • Punta de la Sal: This unique area on the west coast is a treasure trove of volcanic rock formations, including sea caves, arches, and other distinctive structures. A coastal path allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery, and it’s another prime spot for watching the sunset.
  • Roque de La Bonanza: While located on the east coast, Roque de La Bonanza is arguably the most famous rock formation on El Hierro. This distinctive natural volcanic formation, which some say resembles an animal, is a must-see landmark.

An Island Still Growing: The Birth of Tagoro

El Hierro is not just a relic of past volcanic activity; it’s a living, evolving landscape. In December 2011, the volcanic hotspot beneath the Canary Islands sprang to life, causing a submarine eruption off El Hierro’s south coast. This event began “coughing up a new island from underneath the sea”. Although it has yet to break the surface, the undersea volcano, officially named Tagoro in 2016, continues to grow, with approximately 90 to 100 meters still to go before it emerges above sea level. This ongoing geological phenomenon underscores El Hierro’s dynamic nature and its status as a truly active volcanic hotspot.

El Hierro, with its tranquil and unspoiled character, offers an incredibly beautiful island experience, unique among the Canary archipelago. Its wild west coast, with its dramatic cliffs, ancient natural pools, and stunning volcanic arches, provides an inspiring backdrop for exploration and a profound connection with nature’s raw power.
