Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg

While when many hear the name Notre Dame, minds instantly travel to the streets of Paris, however, just two hours north in Strasbourg there is another exquisite Notre Dame site to be enjoyed, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. Strasbourg Cathedral or the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg is a Catholic cathedral in Strasbourg, Alsace, France. Although considerable parts of it are still in Romanesque architecture, it is widely considered to be among the finest examples of Rayonnant Gothic architecture.

Architect Erwin von Steinbach is credited for major contributions from 1277 to his death in 1318, and beyond through his son Johannes von Steinbach, and his grandson Gerlach von Steinbach, who succeeded him as chief architect. The construction of the cathedral, which had started in the year 1015 and had been relaunched in 1190, was finished in 1439. At 142 metres (466 feet), Strasbourg Cathedral was the world’s tallest building from 1647 to 1874 (227 years), when it was surpassed by St. Nikolai’s Church, Hamburg.

Today it is the sixth-tallest church in the world and the highest still standing extant structure built entirely in the Middle Ages. Described by Victor Hugo as a “gigantic and delicate marvel”, and by Goethe as a “sublimely towering, wide-spreading tree of God”, the cathedral is visible far across the plains of Alsace and can be seen from as far off as the Vosges Mountains or the Black Forest on the other side of the Rhine. In 1988, the Strasbourg Cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the historic centre of the city (called the “Grande Île”) because of its outstanding Gothic architecture.

Amazing gothic cathedral. So impressive to see this cathedral and be privileged enough to go inside and climbing to the platform on top. *Cathedral* Inside is free to visit, but there are often queues outside. We found visiting early on a morning we didn't have to queue. Later in the afternoon it was much busier and they close about 11.15 for...

A truly iconic landmark in Strasbourg. Strasbourg Notre-Dame is a huge cathedral right in the city center, especially magical when surrounded by Christmas markets. For centuries, it was the tallest building in the world, which already says a lot about its importance. Inside, the astronomical clock is absolutely stunning, with intricate moving...

We came here during our Rhine River Cruise. If you are in Strasbourg then you can't miss this beautiful marvel of Gothic architecture. It is located right in the heart of city. It's quite big. The beautiful stained glass windows, paintings and sculptures are worth seeing. This 144 meter tall structure is the 7th tallest church in the world. Another...

It's a massive Cathedral with a giant astronomical clock inside, one of Europe’s most extraordinary Gothic cathedrals. Never seen such an impressive architecture like this before. Looks like it was built around 12th century and completed in 16th century. It's free entry and the crowd on a Saturday seems to be coming more after 12pm. I didn't...

Located in the centre of the city and took over four centuries to build. Amazing design both outside, so definitely worth a visit. It's also free to go inside and opens from 8:30. I would advise to go early to avoid the large crowds later on.
