Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein

A Renaissance retreat amid the woodlands of Darmstadt

Darmstadt

Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein

At Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein, woodland paths, quiet ponds and four centuries of stories create a world of their own. Just outside Darmstadt, our former hunting lodge feels pleasantly removed from the everyday, yet warm and easy-going from the moment you arrive. Characterful rooms invite you to settle in, while the forest beckons before breakfast or as dusk begins to fall.

Building: 1648

Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein has evolved across more than four centuries, but the scenery that first drew Hesse-Darmstadt’s rulers here remains central to its character. Around 1580, Landgrave George I transformed an estate north of Darmstadt into a three-winged Renaissance hunting lodge, framed by woods, meadows and ponds.
After the Thirty Years’ War, it became known for elaborate hunts and courtly celebrations. Ludwig VIII later made Kranichstein his principal residence and introduced Baroque elements. In 1790, the lodge became a private summer retreat; during the 19th century, it acquired the Neo-Renaissance appearance largely preserved today. Queen Victoria was among its distinguished visitors.
Following extensive restoration, the building reopened to the public in 1998, and the hotel began its present chapter in 2014. Today, our 48 rooms and suites pair historic surroundings with a calm, understated style. Guests can explore the neighbouring hunting museum, wander around the Backhausteich or simply enjoy the stillness of the estate at their own wonderfully unhurried pace. Kranichstein feels rich in character, but refreshingly free of ceremony.

Some of the Highlights of Staying at Our Historic House

RESTAURANT

At Restaurant Kavaliersbau, our kitchen celebrates regional and seasonal ingredients through fresh, thoughtful cooking. The atmosphere is stylish without being stiff, inviting guests to settle in over lunch, dinner or a carefully chosen wine. Soft, light interiors and details in copper and iron lend the room its distinctive character. In summer, tables move onto the spacious terrace, where conversation lingers a little longer and the surrounding greenery becomes part of the pleasure of dining with us at Kranichstein each evening.

MEETINGS

Meetings at Kranichstein offer useful distance from the usual working day, while remaining well connected across the Rhine-Main region. Our six rooms range from an intimate boardroom to the elegant Schlosssaal, with the Parforcehof available for outdoor breaks and larger events. Daylight, modern technology, flexible layouts and accommodation on site keep arrangements straightforward. Between sessions, a walk around the Backhausteich or through the woods gives everyone some valuable breathing space to reset and return with fresh ideas and renewed energy.

WEDDINGS & SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Weddings and gatherings at Kranichstein feel personal from the outset, with historic rooms, lawns and woods providing a graceful setting. Couples may marry in the Renaissance chapel or hold a civil ceremony in the Blauer Salon or Rondellsaal, before celebrating in the Schlosssaal or across the grounds. Our team helps bring each occasion together, from the reception and menu to cake, decoration and overnight stays, creating a celebration that feels considered, welcoming and true to the people at its heart.
