We’ve been welcoming guests to the Rose & Crown for generations, and while the building may be 18th-century, our approach is anything but stuck in time. Step into the bar — all stone flags, rural artwork and a crackling open fire — and you’ll often find locals and visitors swapping stories over a pint or two.
Our fourteen bedrooms are spread across the Main Inn, cosy Courtyard rooms and the self-contained Monk’s Cottage. Each one is designed with comfort in mind, blending classic style with modern touches and thoughtful details.
Food is at the heart of what we do. Our kitchen takes pride in using local, seasonal ingredients to create honest, flavour-packed dishes that have earned us a loyal following.
Set in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Romaldkirk is a brilliant base for walkers and explorers. High Force, the Bowes Museum and Raby Castle are just down the road — but many guests find they’re just as happy staying put with good food and good company.

Our 14 rooms are spread across the Main Inn, Courtyard and 17th-century Monk’s Cottage — each one with its own charm. Expect period details, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms and thoughtful touches like homemade biscuits, Molton Brown toiletries and reusable glass bottles. All rooms are pet-friendly and just steps from the bar and dining areas. Whether you’re after a suite, twin or double, there’s a space here to unwind after a day exploring Teesdale and beyond.
Our oak-panelled restaurant is full of character — all soft candlelight and relaxed atmosphere. It’s a space that suits both a laid-back lunch and something a little more refined. Our kitchen team offers a menu that balances pub classics with elegant seasonal dishes, all made using the best local ingredients. Whether you’re after hearty comfort or fine dining, there’s something here to suit every appetite — and every occasion.
Teesdale is a paradise for outdoor lovers — with walking routes from our front door, peaceful cycling lanes, and wildlife-rich nature reserves to explore. Borrow one of our classic cars for a scenic drive, cast a line in the River Tees, or book a visit to the nearby Grassholme Observatory for a night under the stars. Antique hunting in Barnard Castle and local heritage spots round off the perfect day out. There’s always something to discover.
