The Inn at Whitewell has been shaped by generations of the Bowman family, who continue to care for this historic riverside inn. Richard Bowman, once a Lancashire cricketer and brewer, oversaw much of its restoration, while his son Charles now guides its evolution. That sense of continuity is part of what makes a stay here feel so grounded and personal.
Life at Whitewell follows the rhythm of the landscape. Guests can fish for salmon, trout and grayling along the inn’s own seven-mile stretch of the River Hodder, or head out on foot, by bike or on horseback to explore the fells of the Forest of Bowland. Picnic hampers and lunches are happily packed for a day outdoors, while evenings might call for a riverside supper in the Orangery — a private dining room with views as memorable as the food itself.

Food is at the heart of life at The Inn at Whitewell. Head Chef Jamie Cadman has led our kitchen for over twenty years, working with a talented team to create dishes that celebrate the best of local produce. Our bar keeps Lancashire ales flowing alongside much-loved classics, while the wine list is guided by Bowland Forest Vintners, our independent merchant, ensuring every glass — like every plate — is full of character and care.
Tucked away on the top floor of the inn, opposite Room 9, you’ll find our SkinSense treatment room — a peaceful retreat designed for complete relaxation. Here, our skilled therapists offer renowned Japanese facials alongside holistic beauty and massage therapies for both women and men. Whether you’re unwinding after a day outdoors or simply indulging in some well-deserved time for yourself, SkinSense is where calm, care and quiet restoration come together.
From intimate gatherings to once-in-a-lifetime celebrations, we take pride in making every occasion personal. Our wedding offering is for complete exclusivity, with all 25 bedrooms, indoor and outdoor spaces, and menus created just for you. Our dedicated weddings and events manager, is here to guide every detail. For meetings, the Gallery provides a riverside setting for up to 14, with high-end technology — or the Orangery for larger groups.
